Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Hawkeye Energy Holdings LLC (Ames, Iowa) and divisions Hawkeye Renewables LLC and Hawkeye Growth LLC plan to have more than 450 million gallons of ethanol capacity online in Iowa by August 2008.

The company started off with a single ethanol plant in Iowa Falls, Iowa, in November 2004 and quickly realized ethanol was in demand and expanded the plant to 100 million gallons in March 2006. In February 2005, Hawkeye began constructing its second plant in Fairbank, Iowa. Operations of that facility began in May 2006, adding 100 million gallons to the company's ethanol production capacity.

Both plants, designed and built by the teams of ICM Incorporated (Colwich, Kansas) and Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota), have nameplate capacities of 100 million gallons per year, but the plants are being pushed above nameplate, and an estimated 220 million gallons are being produced by both plants.

Almost simultaneously, the company began constructing plants in Iowa in Menlo and Shell Rock to push capacity to a projected level of 450 million gallons of capacity and become a major player in not only the Iowa area but the nation.

Using the same design-build team, Hawkeye expects to have the Menlo and Shell Rock plants online by August 2008. Extensive site work and fermentation tank construction is underway, and if weather in the area continues to be favorable, the company should reach its goal of becoming one of the largest ethanol producers in Iowa.
