Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Honda of America Manufacturing Incorporated (Marysville, Ohio), a division of Honda Motor Company Limited (NYSE:HMC) (Tokyo, Japan), announced earlier this week the construction of a new $123 million, state-of-the-art, environmentally-friendly paint shop at its original U.S. assembly plant. The project brings Honda's investment in Ohio to $6 billion in the 25 years since the establishment of its first plant there. The 3.6 million square foot Marysville plant assembles the Honda Accord sedan and coupe and the Acura TL luxury sedan.
TKS Industrial of Toledo, Ohio, will design and engineer the project, and Lathrop Construction of Maumee, Ohio, will handle the construction. Laying of the foundation for the 234,000 square foot paint shop building is underway at this time. The new paint facility will replace the oldest of the plants original paint lines, and will equip the plant for the new Honda-developed water-borne paint system. The system is expected to reduce emissions, and the high-efficiency ovens, air-recycling systems, and variable drive motors will likewise reduce the plant's energy use by one-third.
Another project being undertaken at the same time is a 7-acre, 20-million-gallon run-off pond, which is being built behind the plant. The pond will collect run-off rainwater from parking lots and roofs, which will be used to cool the plant during warm weather, thus reducing energy costs, as well as the use of groundwater. Honda's own facilities group will handle construction of the pond. Honda's commitment to the environment is very evident in this project, as it has been from the beginning of their operations in Ohio in 1982. The plant strives for maximum flexibility in its manufacturing operations for maximum production and minimum waste. In its efforts to be environmentally friendly, the plant also reuses parts containers and recycles steel scrap and other materials. Besides the Marysville plant (Plant 1030196), Honda of America has another Ohio automotive assembly plant, at East Liberty (Plant 1030252), as well as a motorcycle plant at Marysville (Plant 1032479), an engine plant at Anna (Plant 1052366), a new crash-test facility at its R&D facility in Raymond, and a transmission manufacturing plant at Russells Point (Plant 1058410).
Honda of America also has other North American plants, two located in Alliston, Ontario (Plant #1, 2013815 and #2, 1028386); a computer connector plant in Chihuahua (Plant 1030716) and a vehicle assembly plant at El Salto (Plant 1023417), Mexico; a recently-expanded assembly plant in Lincoln, Alabama (Plant 1040713); an all-terrain vehicle assembly plant in Timmonsville, South Carolina (Plant 1032809); a lawn and garden equipment manufacturing plant in Swepsonville, North Carolina (Plant 1032489); and vehicle locking systems manufacturing plants in Selma, Alabama (Plant 1062363) and Bremen, Georgia (Plant 1057657). Honda also owns a water treatment plant in Marysville, Ohio (Plant 1030247).
