In terms of project value, hydropower leads the way, with seven projects valued at $20.94 billion, thermo generation follows with 26 projects valued at $9.31 billion, and wind generation comes next, with 20 projects totaling $3.52 billion.

In terms of project value, 86% of the investment is concentrated in two projects valued at $18.02 billon. These projects are Belo Monte, which is valued at $15.96 billion, and Teles Pires, valued at $2.06 billion.

The Belo Monte hydroelectric power station will have a capacity of 11.2 gigawatts (GW) from 20 560-megawatt (MW) hydro-turbines. Construction of the plant is expected to kick off next month, and commercial operations should begin in 2015 and increase progressively through 2019. The project owner is the Norte Energia SA (Brasilia, Brazil). This build-own-operate (BOO) joint venture is led by Centrais Eletricas do Norte do Brasil SA (Eletronorte) (Brasilia). Eletronorte is a subsidiary of power utility company Centrais Eletricas Brasileiras SA (NYSE:EBR) (Eletrobras) (Brasilia, Brazil).

The Teles Pires project is the largest of several planned hydro projects to be constructed in the Teles Pires River Basin. It will have a generating capacity of 1.82 gigawatts. The kickoff is expected for July, and the first unit should be brought online in January 2015. The owner of the project is Teles Pires Energia Eficiente, a joint venture of Neoenergia (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) (50%); Furnas (Rio de Janeiro) (24.5%); Eletrosul (Florianópolis, Brazil) (24.5%); and Odebrecht (Salvador, Brazil) (0.9%).
