Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Iberdrola Energia (Madrid, Spain) and the engineering firm Odebrecht (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) have formed a joint venture to replace steam generators at the 657-megawatt (MW) Angra I nuclear plant in Angra dos Reis, Brazil.
In two months, Angra I go offline for 30 days for the backend of the nuclear-fuel cycle. In November, the plant will be taken offline again to have its steam generators replaced. The $117 million contract awarded to the companies includes planning, execution and control of the project.
Angra I is currently producing 79.15% of its capacity, or about 520 MW of its total output of 657 MW. The plant was forced to go offline in September 2007 after its electric-generator protection system was alerted. The 657-MW plant has been operating with a pressurized water reactor since 1985. It is located on the Itaorna Beach in Angra dos Reis in Rio de Janeiro. Eletrobras Termonuclear S.A. (Rio de Janeiro), a subsidiary of Electrobras, operates two nuclear plants in Brazil, Angra I and Angra II, and is planning to build a third one, which will be almost a replica of the already existing Angra II and have a generating capacity of 1,350 MW.
