The largest industrial projects being evaluated in Illinois are all power projects, most of which involve large capital outlays for clean coal-fired power plants in the Southern coal mining region of the state. This includes Clean Coal Power Resources, Incorporated's $4.5 billion mine-mouth coal-fired power plant and coal mine (PEC 09003042) and Peabody Energy Corporation (NYSE:BTU) (Saint Louis, Missouri) Prairie State Energy mine-mouth project (PEC 09002860).

According to Industrialinfo.com's Online Plant Directory, Illinois is home to 1,394 major industrial plants. Illinois is broken into three distinct industrial market zones. The Northern zone, or Zone-1 is heavy in the industrial manufacturing, food and beverage, metals & minerals, and chemical processing industry, most of which is centered in and around Chicago and Cook County. In Illinois, a large majority of the industrial plants (931), about 67%, are located in Zone-1.

The Central zone, or Zone-2, with 299 plants tends to have more rural based industries and has a strong showing of Food and Beverage plants. Archer Daniels Midland Company (NYSE: ADM), headquartered in Decatur, Illinois, has a number of plants in this zone.

The Southern zone, or Zone-3, has the fewest number of industrial plants of Illinois zones with 164. Madison and Saint Clair counties on the Illinois side of Saint Louis, Missouri are by far the industrial centers of this zone due in part to their access to the transportation infrastructure of Mississippi River. The southern part of the state is also home to substantial coal reserves and mining operations.

In the past year, Industrialinfo.com's (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas) research staff has disseminated 6,968 industrial projects in the U.S. These projects available on PECWeb Direct represent greater than $395 billion in capital and maintenance spending scheduled for construction kick-off between now and 2010. The Top 10 states for industrial project spending account for 45% of the industrial business in the U.S. Leading the pack is Texas with $38.4 billion in industrial project spending spread across 670 projects. California is second with 368 projects representing $24.5 billion.
