Bids Invited for 1,000-Megawatt Maharashtra Power Station
Bids have been invited by Maharashtra State Power Generation Company (Mahagenco) from domestic and international developers for the construction of a 1,000-megawatt (MW) power station at Chandrapur. Winning developers will be responsible for design, supply and commissioning of the main plant equipment, apart from auxiliaries for the 2 x 500 MW project, which will extend the existing 2,340-MW project. Mahagenco is expanding four projects in the state by a total of 2,000 MW. The company is also planning five more new and expansion projects totaling 5,540 MW. It has a current installed capacity of 9,200 MW.
Adani Raising $750 Million for 10,000 Megawatts
Adani Enterprises is raising $750 million as part of its plan to create 10,000 MW of power generating capacity over the next five years. It currently has initiated two projects totaling 4,620 MW at Mundra in Gujurat (2,640 MW) and Dahej in Gujurat (1,980 MW). It plans to expand Mundra by 1,980 MW and set up new units in Rajasthan (1,320 MW) and Dahej in Gujurat (1,980 MW). Adani will also develop the 2,000 MW Tiroda project in the Gondia district of Maharashtra.
Andhra Pradesh Behind Schedule on Power-Capacity Projects
Delays are plaguing Andhra Pradesh's drive to create 3,700 MW of new power capacity through two projects. The 1,600-MW supercritical Krishnapatnam coal-fed project and the 2,100-MW Karimnagar gas-fed project are both running nearly a year behind schedule. The 1,600-MW project should go ahead beginning next month, but the 2,100-MW project has had difficulties securing gas supplies. Technical bids have been submitted by a number of major companies, but financial bids cannot be invited until the gas supply agreement is in place.
Vedanta Putting $8 Billion into Sterlite
Vedanta Resources will invest $12 billion in power and metal projects in India and launch an initial public offering for the flotation of Sterlite Energy. $8 billion will be invested in Sterlite power projects, and the balance will go to metals projects.
OIL & GAS TRANSMISSION
RIL, GAIL Compete for 1,400-Megawatt Gas Project
Reliance Industries (RIL) and GAIL are in competition to supply 8 million standard cubic meters of gas per day (mscmd) to state-owned Karnataka Power Corp's 1,400-megawatt (MW) power project at Bidadi. RIL would transport the gas to the $1.4 billion project from its fields in the Godavari Basin. GAIL is planning a $625 million gas pipeline from Dahbol in Maharashtra to Bangalore to carry 16 mscmd of gas. There will be a three gap for the chosen supplier to provide the pipeline to supply the project before Bidadi is operational.
INDUSTRIAL MANUFACTURING
Indo Asian Fusegear Moving Forward on Three New Manufacturing Ventures
Indo Asian Fusegear is planning to double capacity in value terms to $250 million by the end of 2010. $37.5 million has been set aside for domestic and foreign acquisitions. Indo Asian Fusegear manufactures switchgears and compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and is moving into three new divisions - power distribution, wires and cable manufacturing and building automation. There are plans to set up three plants in addition to the nine now in operation. A joint venture, Indo Asian Simon, is being set up to manufacture wiring accessories and products. In Saudi Arabia a joint venture with Saudi National Glass will manufacture CFLs and high discharge intensity lamps and another domestic plant will be set up to manufacture wires and cables.
