Industrialinfo.com Forecasts Over $38 Billion in Capital Expenditures For Coal-Fired Power Plant and Mine Construction

In its recently released 2003 U.S. Coal Industry Forecast, Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas) identifies over $38 Billion in capital expenditures for the coal industry. A record number of coal-fired generation power plants and related mine projects are in the development stages as the nation looks to coal as a secure and abundant energy resource for the future. Of these projects under development, there are 128 potential coal-fired units with a nameplate capacity of over 58,000 megawatts in various stages of development scheduled for start up between now and 2010. The forecast also identifies over one $1 Billion in new coal mine construction.

The 2001-2002 period was a roller coaster ride of excitement for the coal industry. High natural gas prices and energy shortages in early 2001 saw coal demand increase across the U.S. Even high sulfur eastern coal, which had seen years of depression, was in high demand. This led to a period of development and capital spending as companies fought to gain market share, which only recently has shown signs of tapering off.

Industrialinfo.com's 2003 U.S. Coal Industry Forecast focuses on the capital spending and business trends affecting the industry today and projects out coal-fired generation and coal mining industry consumption, and production requirements to the year 2020. The forecast is split into two main sections; coal-fired generation which deals with power companies, their plants, and trends occurring in those plants and coal mining, which deals with coal mining companies, mines, transportation issues, and trends in the coal mining arena.
