International Chemical Projects Totaling More Than $20 Billion to Start Construction in 1Q09

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Industrial Info has identified 80 international chemical projects that are scheduled to begin construction during the first quarter of 2009. The total investment value (TIV) of these projects adds up to $21.9 billion. Nine of the projects already have designated engineering and construction firms.

Almost half (34) of these projects will be built in China with a TIV of $7 billion. Thirteen of the projects will be constructed in Brazil at a cost of $5.7 billion.

One of the larger projects set to begin construction during the first quarter of 2009 is Sonatrach's (Hydra, Algeria) $2.4 billion fertilizer complex in Arzew, Algeria. When complete, the site will produce 7,000 metric tons per day of urea utilizing Snamprogetti and Uhde process technology, and 4,000 metric tons per day of ammonia incorporating process technology licensed by Haldor Topsoe (Lyngby, Denmark). Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (TYO:7011) (Minato, Tokyo) is serving as the engineering and construction firm and Daewoo International Corporation (SEO:047050) (Seoul, South Korea) has been assigned as the general contractor.

Lanxess AG (FRA:LXSG) (Leverkusen, Germany) has selected Jacobs Engineering Group's (NYSE:JEC) (Pasadena, California) Singapore office to serve as the engineer on a grassroot butyl rubber plant to be built in Singapore. The site will produce 100,000 metric tons per year when it is complete in the last half of 2010. The TIV for this site is estimated at $600 million.

Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates) is proceeding with an $800 million nitrogen plant to be built in Mirfa, United Arab Emirates. The company has selected Linde AG (FRA:LIN) (Munich, Germany) to serve as the engineering and construction firm, as well as a joint venture partner for the 670,000 SCM per hour plant. Production is expected to commence in the last quarter of 2010.
