Iroquois Bio-Energy Breaks Ground on $66 Million Fuel Ethanol Plant in Indiana

Iroquois Bio-Energy was originally planned as a farmer owned co-op with 80 investor farmers.

Released Thursday, August 18, 2005

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Iroquois Bio-Energy (Hebron, Indiana) has begun construction on a new $64 million fuel ethanol plant in Rensselaer, Indiana.

Plans call for the creation of a nameplate 40 million gallon per year fuel ethanol plant that will convert about 14.3 million bushels of corn annually into the renewable fuel. Both ethanol by-products, dried distiller’s grains, and carbon dioxide will be produced at the plant. A dry ice manufacturing facility will also be erected at the site and operated by a separate private company.

The company selected Fagen Incorporated (Granite Falls, Minnesota) to construct the plant and the official groundbreaking was held just last week.

Construction is expected to take about fourteen months to complete and the facility is expected to create about 35 full time jobs.

Iroquois Bio-Energy was originally planned as a farmer owned co-op with 80 investor farmers. In 2002, the organization was changed to a limited liability company to open investment opportunities to non-farmers. Since then, the company has secured $24 million in private monies, received some $6 million in grants from the U.S. department of Energy, and had enough equity in the project to secure a bank loan.

Iroquois Bio-Energy will be the second ethanol plant to be located in the state of Indiana. New Energy Corporation currently operates a 100 plus million gallon per day plant in South Bend and has six additional projects currently under development in the state. If all of these projects move forward and are built, Indiana could have the capacity to add 655 million gallons annually to the domestic fuel ethanol market.
