ISP Minerals Seeks Site in Mid-Atlantic Region for Quarry, Roofing-Granules Plant
Undaunted, ISP Minerals is not giving up on the project, which is essentially postponed for at least two years until a suitable site is located.

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--ISP Minerals Incorporated (Hagerstown, Maryland), a subsidiary of privately held International Specialty Products Incorporated (Wayne, New Jersey), is back to square one in its quest to build a grassroot quarry and roofing-granules manufacturing plant in the Mid-Atlantic region. First reported by Industrial Info in September 2006, the company was set to begin construction in late 2006 at a 1,076-acre site near Siler City, North Carolina, in Chatham County, but local "not in my backyard" opposition over concerns about noise, water table issues and lawsuits doomed the project. In early 2007, other sites were evaluated, and the company focused on a 1,200-acre site near Parksville, South Carolina, in McCormick County, but that site also attracted local opposition and was shelved.
Undaunted, ISP Minerals is not giving up on the project, which is essentially postponed for at least two years until a suitable site is located. The $110 million project involves the construction of a hard rock quarry, which will mine basalt, granite or metamorphosed volcanic rock that will be milled to granule size. The granules are then colorized with a semi-ceramic water-based coating. The granules are then used to produce roofing shingles.
ISP Minerals continues to evaluate sites in the Mid-Atlantic region, including in the Carolinas and in Virginia.
