Kansas Develops 3,375 Megawatts of New Coal-Based Power Generation

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). There are five sites and six units currently under study for baseload generation in Kansas. Four of the sites and five of the units will utilize coal in its normal state with back-end equipment to reduce emissions. One project site will be for the United States Department of Energy for the development of a 275-megawatt (MW) Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle (IGCC) power block [combustion turbine/generator (CT) with heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) driving a steam turbine/generator (ST)] plus the sequestering of carbon oxides).

Other projects include an 800 MW station being located in Atchison, Kansas by Great Plains Power, a subsidiary of Great Plains Energy, Incorporated (NYSE:GXP) (Kansas City, Missouri).

In another project, Westar Energy, Incorporated (NYSE:WR) (Topeka, Kansas) is contemplating the addition of a 600 MW fourth unit at the Jeffery Energy Center in Pottawatomie County near Saint Mary’s, Kansas.

Tri-State Generation & Transmission Association (Westminster, Colorado) along with Sunflower Electric Power Corporation (Hays, Kansas) are studying the addition of two 600 MW units adjacent to Sunflowers Holcomb station in Finney County near Holcomb, Kansas.

And the fifth project involves the Kansas Board of Public Utilities preparing for the addition of a 500 MW unit at its Newman Creek Station in Kansas City, which will not only meet its needs, but the company has lined up other utilities to utilize the off-take.
