Largest Hardwood Lumber Mill in U.S. Under Construction

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Even though the recent slowdown in the housing market has led to many sawmills across the U.S. slowing production and even to some shutting down operations, Collins Companies (Portland, Oregon) is forging ahead with a new $35 million sawmill in Boardman, Oregon. Collins was contracted by Greenwood Resources to build what is expected to become the largest hardwood (poplar) lumber mill in the country.

Construction started last fall, and the facility is scheduled for operation by June 2008. The primary building for the sawmill has been completed and awaits mechanical installation of the single-line sawmill. A new planer mill and dry kiln were constructed at the Port of Morrow to finish the rough-cut lumber. The Beck Group (Portland) is coordinating engineering along with original equipment manufacturers.

The Boardman tree farm was purchased from Potlatch in 2007. Tree Farm Resources purchased the 17,000-acre tree farm and combined it with its 6,000-acre Sand Lake tree farm, resulting in a 23,000-acre plantation of polar trees.

Pacific Albus, a fast-growing poplar hybrid, can be used for various products, such as veneers, wood pallets, cabinets, light grids and door cores. Trees will be harvested on a 12- to 15-year rotation, and limbs will be pruned to 25 feet high.
