Lower Colorado River Authority Prepares for NOx Reduction Project at Texas Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Preparations are being made for a Nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction project (PEC 01008644) on a 460 megawatt (MW) unit at the Fayette Power Station (Plant 1000064). Construction is to start this summer and the installation is scheduled for the spring of 2005.

The plant is situated in Fayette County, 60 miles east of Austin, and seven-miles east of La Grange, Texas. The coal-fired power plant is comprised of two 615 MW units, a 460 MW unit, with three General Electric tandem-compound turbine and generator sets, and three Alstom Combustion Engineering tangential-fired boilers. All units came online between 1979 and 1988.

The technique used to reduce NOx at the Fayette plant includes the installation of an over-fire air system, which uses air staging to maintain low combustion temperature, and reduce NOx emissions. While this technology does not accomplish the largest possible NOx reduction, the cost is relatively low.

The Fayette Power Station is co-owned by the Lower Colorado River Authority (LCRA) (63.6%) and Austin Energy (36.4%), with LCRA being the operator of the plant.

The Lower Colorado River Authority (Austin, Texas) depends heavily on the Fayette plant to offer reliable electricity for Central Texas consumers. The company delivers electricity, developing water and wastewater utilities, plus managing the water supply and environment of the lower Colorado River basin.
