Maine Woods Pellet Proceeds with ORC Power Unit for Mill

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Fuel pellet producer Maine Woods Pellet Company LLC (Athens, Maine) has picked Turboden srl (Brescia, Italy) to provide its mill with a biomass-based Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) power-generating system. Turboden is part of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Limited (Tokyo, Japan).

Construction of the $25 million unit started in May and is scheduled to be completed by December 2015. The unit will provide 8 megawatts for the mill in Athens, Maine. Excess power will be diverted to the local grid. Maine Woods Pellet signed a power purchase agreement with Central Maine Power (Augusta, Maine) in January. The project will take advantage of a federal tax credit.

The biomass unit will use the thermal heat oil produced from wood residues after de-barking and chipping operations at the 100,000-ton-per-year fuel pellet mill.

Turboden's first ORC unit in North America is located at TransGas Limited's (Regina, Saskatchewan) Rosetown Compressor Station in Saskatchewan, Canada. The unit has been in operation since November 2011 and uses waste heat from the gas turbine's exhaust system, producing 7 million kilowatts per year.
