Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--The 199,726-barrel-per-day (BBL/d) Milazzo refinery will undergo several planned maintenance turnarounds later this year. The Italian refinery is a 50:50 joint venture between Kuwait Petroleum International (KPI) (Safat, Kuwait) and AGIP Petroli (Rome, Italy), a subsidiary of Eni SpA (NYSE:E) (Rome).
The Milazzo Refinery is located on the Gulf of Milazzo on the north coast of Sicily. Built in 1961, the refinery, originally called the "Mediterranean Sicilian Refinery" was purchased in 1982 by Agip Petroli. At the end of 1996, KPI, a subsidiary of Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (Safat), bought 50% of Agip Petroli's shares. Currently, this site is one of the most complex European refineries and produces several types of low-sulfur distilled products.
The shutdown will take place in September 2009 and is expected to last approximately 30 non-production days. The turnaround will entail mainly routine inspection, cleaning and maintenance and will affect the Fluid Catalytic Cracker, the Alkylation unit, the Hydroisomerization unit, the methyl tertiary butyl ether unit and the Acid Regeneration unit. The refinery's last major turnaround took place in 2008, and the next major event is planned for 2012.
