Maintenance Work on Brazilian Hydroelectric Power Plant Nearing Completion

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In mid-December 2007, Cemig's Tres Marias hydroelectric power plant was forced to shut down its 66-megawatt (MW) Unit 1 because of a failure at the hydraulic circuit, particularly at the velocity regulator. Plant officials revealed to Industrial Info that they plan to finish maintenance work on January 26, 2008.

The 396-MW power plant is in Tres Marias City in the southeastern state of Mina Gerais. It has been in production since 1962. Tres Marias is equipped with six 66-MW Voith Kaplan hydraulic turbines and Siemens generators.

On January 8, 2008, maintenance operators began a planned outage at Unit 3. Operators will perform a modernization, including the control system's digitalization.
