Marathon Cheese Proceeding with Construction of $27 Million Cheese Packing Plant in Idaho

Reported by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). One of the largest independent packagers of natural cheese in the world, Marathon Cheese Corporation (Marathon, Wisconsin), is proceeding with construction activity on a new $27 million cheese packing plant that will be located in Mountain Home, Idaho. The pre-cast concrete wall panels are currently going up on the 212,000 square-foot building, despite wet weather conditions that have delayed construction activity over the past month.

Plans are to construct 100,000 square feet of production and packing area, a 90,000 square-foot refrigerated storage building and 10,000 square feet of office space. The operation will convert block cheese, coming into the plant at 640 pound blocks, into custom cheese products that will be sliced, diced, chopped, cubed or shredded before it's packaged and shipped to markets worldwide.

The company selected H & M Construction Company Incorporated (Fountain Hills, Arizona) as the general contractor for the project and construction is scheduled to be complete by January of 2007. Once the plant goes into operation, approximately 250 people will be hired to initially run the plant and employment is expected to reach over 500 people once the plant is running at full capacity.

Marathon Cheese Corporation has over fifty years of experience in packaging cheese, a time period that has seen the company steadily and quietly grow from a tiny operation started in a basement by Ray and Marie Goldbach to become one of the largest independent natural cheese packagers. Marathon Cheese also operates cheese manufacturing plants in Marathon and Medford, Wisconsin and Booneville, Mississippi.
