Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). To meet environmental compliance laws, Michigan State University is nearing construction on a SNCR (Selective Non-Catalytic Reduction) project on three (3) of its units in the T B Simon Powerhouse in East Lansing, Michigan. In addition, university officials are in the early planning stages for the addition of a new steam turbine generator to increase the overall power generated.
The $6 million SNCR project will involve the addition of SNCR units on Units #1, #2, and #3 to reduce Nox emissions at the powerhouse. The university expects to complete financial and design reviews in late 2002 and anticipates construction beginning in early 2003. The powerhouse must be in compliance by 2004.
The proposed new steam turbine generator, in the very early planning stages, would involve the addition of a $15 million 20+ MW unit. Current plans are to seek an outside design/build/own/operate firm who would build and run the new unit for 30 years before selling it back to the university. Selection of the outside firm is expected in early 2003 with actual construction not beginning until mid 2004.
Michigan State University was founded in 1855 as the nation's first agricultural college, the prototype for 72 land grant colleges later established under the Morrill Act of 1862. Residing on 5,198 acres in East Lansing, Michigan, Michigan State University boasts an enrollment of 44,227. The T B Simon powerhouse maintains four (4) units and produces 69 MW of electricity and 1.2 million lbs/hr of steam for use by the university.
