Missouri Generators Developing over 1,900 Megawatts of New Renewable Energy

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas). Power producers in Missouri are looking at renewable energy as an alternative for the state’s future power needs. The power producers are evaluating sixteen sites equaling about 1,900 megawatts (MW) of renewable generation. These proposed projects would represent about 33% of the new power generation being planned in the state.

The majority of the proposed renewable generation, about 1,260 MW, comes from wind power. Wind power developers include Invenergy Wind LLC (Chicago, Illinois), John Deere Wind Energy (Johnston, Iowa), Wind Capital Group (Saint Louis, Missouri), Community Energy (Wayne, Pennsylvania) and TradeWind Energy LLC (Lenexa, Kansas). These companies have proposed seven wind farms, most of which will be located in northwest Missouri where the wind resources are the greatest.

Hydroelectric generation is the second largest renewable resource being proposed with about 650 MW at five sites. The four smallest sites are being proposed on the Mississippi River at the Army Corps of Engineers’ lock and dams. The city of Quincy, Illinois is proposing three sites on the Mississippi River, two in Missouri and a third in Illinois. Two more new hydro sites are being proposed by NatEl America Hydropower Company (Grapevine, Texas). In addition, a 500 MW pumped-storage hydro plant is being proposed on Wings Lake (Pea Ridge, Missouri) by Saint Louis private energy producer, Upland Wings Incorporated.

Three municipalities, Columbia, Jefferson and Lamar plus Allied Waste Industries, are all looking at utilizing landfill gas to provide fuel for internal combustion engine/generators or small gas turbines to produce a total of about 18 MW of renewable generation.
