Mitsubishi Electric Power Products to Construct Transformer Plant in Tennessee

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Mitsubishi Electric Power Products Incorporated (MEPPI) (Warrendale, Pennsylvania) plans to build a $200 million electric transformer manufacturing plant in Memphis, Tennessee.

Known as "Project 21" for most of 2010, MEPPI announced plans to build the new manufacturing plant last April before officially choosing a site for the plant.

MEPPI will construct a 350,000-square-foot building on a 100-acre site in the Rivergate Industrial Park. The new plant will include the installation of production and supporting equipment to manufacture electric transformers and is expected to produce extra-high-voltage shell-type power transformers.

The facility will be Mitsubishi's national headquarters for the production of heavy electrical equipment. Site preparation is expected to begin in May. Building construction is slated to start in June, with overall completion scheduled for the spring of 2013.

Approximately 90 new jobs will be created initially, and 275 jobs will be created once the plant reaches full operations. The company's current customers include Memphis Light Gas and Water and Tennessee Valley Authority (Knoxville, Tennessee).

McCallum Sweeney Consulting (Greenville, South Carolina) and O'Neal Incorporated (Greenville) were selected to provide consulting services and engineering and construction services for the new plant.
