SUGAR LAND--May 16, 2016--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Chinese manufacturers are investing in factories in the U.S. and are leveraging knowledge they've gained in the U.S. for factories back home to help them move into higher-value production.
The growing presence of Chinese manufacturers in the U.S. is significant. Several Chinese auto parts companies are operating, building or making their way to the U.S. Wanxiang Group Corporation (Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China) operates several plants in the U.S and plans to build more. Shandon Tranlin Paper Company has chosen Richmond, Virginia for a plant to make household products.
Other Chinese companies are setting up shop across the country as they aspire to high-end markets. The advent of Chinese-owned companies in the U.S. comes with mixed reactions. Some see such companies as bringing jobs to the U.S., but others see them as taking business away from local competitors.
The Reshoring Initiative, an advocacy group whose mission is to "bring good, well-paying manufacturing jobs back to the United States," says "about 60,000 U.S. manufacturing jobs were created in 2014 as a result of 'reshoring' and foreign direct investment. We believe roughly 8,000 of those jobs came to China-owned companies. Total U.S. employment at China-backed operations is on track to surpass 100,000 jobs by the end of 2015."
Volvo Car Corporation (Gothenburg, Sweden), which was bought by China's Zhejiang Geely Holding Group Company, Ltd. (Binjiang District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, China), has a new plant in South Carolina that is scheduled to take over production of the S60 model when it opens in 2018. The vehicles are currently being produced in Chengdu, China. The auto makers in South Carolina have said they welcome the business but also fear the competition. Also, Jiangnan Mould & Plastic Technology Company Limited (Jiangyin City, China) is planning a new plant in Greer, South Carolina.
