Nashtec Moves Forward With Construction Phases of Grassroot Alumina Trihydrate Plant in Texas

Nashtec LP (Corpus Christi, Texas), a joint venture of Sherwin Alumina Company (Corpus Christi, Texas) and Nabaltec GmbH (Shwandorf, Germany), is nearing the completion of the civil site construction phase of its grassroot alumina trihydrate plant located adjacent to Sherwin Williams’ alumina refinery. Nashtec has recently solicited mechanical bids and is preparing for structural erection and mechanical phases to begin in early January.

River Consulting LLC (Pittsburg, Pennsylvania) has provided much of the design and engineering support for this estimated $22 million project and will be responsible for soliciting the remaining electrical and instrumentation bid documents between February and March of next year. Current construction schedules call for the plant to be complete and producing commercial quantities of merchant product by mid-summer 2006. The plant is designed to produce 23,000 tons per year of alumina trihydrate (ATH) utilizing Apyral® 40 CD technology to be used for a halogen free flame retardant.

Initial cost estimates to achieve additional capacity could reach $7 million or more over two years.
