New England Attracts Nearly $4 Billion in Capital and Maintenance Project Spending for 2004

The New England region continues to prove its importance in the industrial marketplace with $3.7 billion in capital and maintenance projects scheduled to kick-off in 2004. As reported in Industrialinfo.com's 2004 Industrial Outlook and its most recent quarterly update, the projects are spread among the region's 1,638 operational plants. While most industry groups have a presence in the region, Power and the Pharmaceutical-Biotech industries have emerged as New England’s clear spending leaders. Power led with the most capital and maintenance projects (46), valued at over $1.4 billion, while the Pharmaceutical-Biotech sector's 26 projects moved ahead in spending with a total of $ 1.7 billion anticipated for 2004. The Food & Beverage sector remains strong in the region with nine projects valued at $150 million. The New England region is one of the most mature industrial areas in the United States and is home to nearly 1,700 operational plants. The industrial manufacturing sector leads with almost 700 plants, followed by more than 200 pulp and paper plants, 215 food and beverage plants, and 152 power generating stations. Some of the plants scheduled for completion this year in New England include: Nestlé's $100 million bottled water plant (Plant 1060720), Lowe's $90 million distribution center (Plant 1058315) and Pfizer's $35 million clinical research lab (Plant 1060505).
