North Carolina's First Commercial Windfarm Begins Operation

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--North Carolina's first commercial-scale windfarm is now fully operational with the recent completion of the 208-megawatt (MW) Amazon Windfarm US East project. The windfarm, which is located in Pasquotank and Perquimans counties, began commercial operations earlier this month.

The windfarm uses 104 Gamesa (G-114) wind turbines, each rated at 2 MW. The commercial-scale windfarm is one of the first in the southeastern United States. It began delivering test power in December.

Wanzek Construction (West Fargo, North Dakota) built the windfarm in 18 months. The project created more than 500 jobs during the peak of construction and also created 17 permanent jobs. Avangrid Renewables (Portland, Oregon) owns the facility and will maintain and operate it. The project had a total investment value of $416 million.
