Nova Scotia Power Continues Biomass Power Plant Construction in Port Hawkesbury

Nova Scotia Power Incorporated (NSPI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Emira Incorporated (TSX:EMA) (Halifax), is continuing with construction of a new biomass power plant.

Released Monday, March 26, 2012

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Nova Scotia Power Incorporated (NSPI) (Halifax, Nova Scotia), a wholly owned subsidiary of Emira Incorporated (TSX:EMA) (Halifax), is continuing with construction of a new biomass power plant at the closed NewPage pulp and paper mill in Port Hawkesbury, Nova Scotia.

In the process of filing Chapter 11 bankruptcy reorganization, NewPage closed the mill in September 2011. Stern Partners Incorporated (Vancouver, British Columbia) is negotiating to purchase the mill but is waiting for approval by the Nova Scotia Utility and Review Board. The sale of the mill will be contingent on acceptance of terms by NewPage creditors and the court.

A 60-megawatt (MW) Mitsubishi steam turbine is expected to arrive in April. Delivery of the turbine was delayed due to last year's devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan.

The plant will utilize the existing Babcock & Wilcox (NYSE:BWC) boiler that is being retrofitted. New fuel preparation and handling systems will be installed. Some of the electricity generated will power the mill, while the remaining will go to the grid and count toward Nova Scotia Power's renewable power generation use.

Mechanical completion of the plant is expected by September of this year, and commissioning and startup are expected by March 2013. Estimated costs to build the plant are in the $208 million range.
