Released Thursday, January 24, 2008
Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--North America has about 115,000 megawatts (MW) of nuclear power generation. The supply comes from 124 units at 74 nuclear power plants with an average capacity of 926 MW per unit.
A 70% increase of more than 81,000 MW of proposed nuclear power generation in development consists of 66 nuclear units at 39 plants. The average capacity of the new planned nuclear generating units will be 1,234 MW. Units will be installed at 25 existing plants, and the others will be built at 14 grassroot sites. The grassroot plants will be in Alabama, Alaska, Alberta, California, Florida, Idaho, North and South Carolina, Texas and Utah. Texas has the most proposed new generation with 12 units totaling 16,400 MW. Plans in Texas call for the expansion of two nuclear power stations and the addition of two grassroot projects.
The additional proposed nuclear generation would bring the operational total to more than 196,000 MW in North America at 88 plants with an average capacity of 1,032 MW per unit.
