Oglethorpe Underway on Construction of 520MW Power Plant in Georgia

Oglethorpe Power Corporation (Tucker, Ga.), a privately owned utility corporation, is underway on construction of a $300 million, 520 mega-watt (MW) combined-cycle natural gas-fired power plant in Heard County, Georgia.

The facility will be located at the site of an existing power plant that Oglethorpe already has a 30% interest in. Oglethorpe and Georgia Power jointly own the coal-fired Hal B. Wansley power station where the combined-cycle plant will be built. Construction of the new plant has been underway since May of 2001. The site is located roughly 50 miles southwest of Atlanta just outside of Roopville, Georgia.

Siemens Westinghouse Electric Corporation (Orlando, Flor.) has been selected as the Design-Build firm on this project that is expected to take about 22 months to complete. The clean-burning natural gas plant will utilize two 167MW Siemens V84.3A2 combustion turbines and an 187MW steam turbine generator. Electricity will be delivered to the statewide transmission grid to service consumers throughout the state.
