Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Okikendawt Generating Station began commercial operations late last month, following its completion by Hydromega Services Incorporated (Montreal, Quebec). The 10-megawatt (MW) hydroelectric facility is located in Dokis 9, Ontario, which is a First Nations reserve. It is a joint venture between Hydromega and the Dokis First Nation.
Construction of the plant began in July 2013, with a total investment value of $20 million. Hydromega will own and operate the new facility.
The new facility is adjacent to an existing dam that controls an outflow from Ontario's Lake Nipissing into the French River. All energy generated by the small hydro plant will be sold to the Ontario Power Authority for a 40-year term, via a feed-in tariff power purchase agreement.
