Written by Richard Finlayson, Senior International Editor for Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Oman will carry the total cost of the $1 billion gas pipeline and related infrastructure to be constructed between Iran and Oman. The investment will be recouped from revenue generated from the sale of the gas.
The pipeline will have a length of 350 kilometers, of which 200 kilometers will be laid undersea. It will link Iranshahr to the port of Sohar in Oman. Last week, the Iranians signed a three-year deal with Oman to export 30 million cubic meters of gas per day. This follows two contracts with Iran to sell 45 million cubic meters per day. The total value of the export gas export deal is about $60 billion.
Iran has 18% of global gas reserves, estimated at 33.6 trillion cubic meters, and produces 575 million cubic meters per day, which is equal to the country's domestic consumption level.
Iran also is expected to launch five phases of the South Pars gas field, with 180 million cubic meters per day of additional production capacity through 2017, the year when the pipeline is scheduled to be completed. Current production at South Pars is about 300 million cubic meters per day of gross gas, of which 200 million cubic meters are refined.
Iran and Oman will establish a joint company for selling gas, providing an opportunity for Iran to enter Oman's retail market with 10 billion cubic meters of gas annually.
