Panel Approves Feasibility Report for China Huaneng's Lancang River Dahuaqiao Hydropower Station
An expert panel has approved the feasibility study report for Huaneng Lancang River Hydropower Development Company Limited (Hydro Lancang) (Kunming, Yunnan)'s 920-megawatt (MW) Dahuaqiao Hydropower Station, according to a subsidiary of China Huaneng Group (Beijing).

The report by HydroChina Beijing Engineering Corporation (Beijing) was cleared on December 11 by a panel under the joint organization of the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI) (Beijing), Yunnan Provincial Development and Reform Commission and the Yunnan Provincial Energy Administration in Kunming, according to Hydro Lancang, a subsidiary of China Huaneng Group.
The Dahuaqiao Hydropower Station marks the sixth step in the development of a reservoir with seven cascade projects for the Lancang River from Gushui to Miaowei.
The dam site has a catchment area of 92.6 thousand square kilometers (36,000 square miles) with an annual average flow of 925 cubic meters (33,000 cubic feet) per second.
The main purpose of the project is to generate power. The project is mainly comprised of a dam with a reservoir capacity of 2.62-billion cubic meters (92.5 billion cubic feet) under a normal pool level (NPL) of 1477 meters above sea level, with a powerhouse to be furnished with four 230-MW hydraulic-turbine generating units and one switch yard.
As the designer and engineering service provider, HydroChina Beijing has conducted a several project studies since the preliminary feasibility study was approved in September 2008.
Following the approval of the feasibility study report, construction of the project is expected to begin next year. According to the schedule, all four units are expected to begin operation in 2016. Upon completion, the project will be able to generate 4.07 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity every year.
