Paseo-Cargill Aiming for Late First-Quarter '08 Start-up on New Missouri Biodiesel Plant

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Member-owned biodiesel start-up Paseo-Cargill Energy (Kansas City, Missouri), a joint venture project between Paseo Biofuels LLC (Jefferson City, Missouri) and privately held agribusiness giant Cargill Incorporated (Wayzata, Minnesota), held its official ribbon-cutting ceremony last week in anticipation of starting up production of a new biodiesel plant in Kansas City, Missouri.

Construction began in December 2006, and the company selected Lurgi Incorporated (Memphis, Tennessee) to design and build the estimated $40 million plant. New equipment is still being installed, and testing of some systems is underway. The company expects to begin producing biodiesel by March 2008.

The plant will be on the site of Cargill's existing soybean-crushing facility, which is currently spending more than $120 million to expand the mill's soybean-processing capacity to 165,000 bushels per day to feed additional soybean oil feedstock to the plant.

The soybean oil from the crush plant will feed a 40-million-gallon-per-year biodiesel plant that will also produce about 30 million pounds of food-grade glycerin, a by-product of biodiesel production, annually.

Currently there are only two operational biodiesel plants in Missouri. Mid-America Biofuels operates a 30-million-gallon-per-year plant in Mexico, and Global Fuels operates a small 3 million-gallon-per-year plant in Dexter.

Prairie Pride Incorporated put its 30 million-gallon-per-year plant in Nevada into operation in November 2007; however, the on-site crusher will not be completed until April 2008.

Four additional biodiesel plants are in the pre-construction phase in Missouri.
