Petroleum Production in Bangladesh May Cease as ERL Plans Turnaround at Chittagong Refinery

Researched by Industrial Info Resources India (Delhi, India)--Bangladesh could be heading for a severe shortage of refined products, as the country's sole refinery, which meets more than 40% of the country's demand for refined products, is scheduled to begin a 40-day planned maintenance shutdown in December 2011. The refinery, located in Chittagong, has a throughput capacity of 30,000 barrels per day (BBL/d). With the halt in production, Bangladesh would need imports from major oil-producing countries in South Asia to meet its demand for refined products.

The overall cost of the turnaround has been pegged at $6 million.

The refinery primarily produces fuels, along with certain specialty non-fuel products used in industry.

The refinery processes primarily two types of crude oil: Arabian Light Crude (ALC) from Saudi Arabia and Murban Crude from Abu Dhabi. ERL also processes a small quantity (about 200-250 BBL/d) of oil from the Haripur gas field. Refined products supplied by ERL meet the demand for most of the petroleum products of the country except kerosene, jet fuel and diesel. These are imported as finished products to supplement the deficit.
