Plans for New Power Generation in Idaho Could Double Capacity

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers are proposing more than 3,500 megawatts (MW) of new generation in Idaho. If these projects come to fruition, the state's generation capacity could increase by about 109%, bringing its capacity up from about 3,300 MW to about 6,900 MW. New planned generation unit additions will use varied fuel sources, including nuclear, conventional and gasified coal, hydroelectric, waste heat, geothermal and wind technologies.

The new generation will include about 1,600 MW that will be renewable energy. Wind generation leads the renewable planned generation with plans for the windfarms producing more than 1,300 MW. Geothermal power generation could provide 230 MW and hydroelectric power will follow with about 60 MW.

New nuclear and coal fuel sources are expected to provide the balance of about 1,950 MW with three plants. The Idaho Nuclear Energy Complex (Bruneau, Idaho), owned by Alternate Energy Holdings' (OTC:AEHI) (Thaxton, Virginia) Idaho Energy Complex Corporation (Mountain Home, Idaho), is expected to supply about 1,600 MW of new generation. Independent power producer Southeast Idaho Energy LLC, a subsidiary of Refined Energy Holdings Management Incorporated (Denver, Colorado), plans to install a 100 MW integrated gasification combined-cycle (IGCC) unit, as part of its Power County Advanced Energy Center (American Falls, Idaho). A coal circulating fluidized bed boiler with a 250 MW steam turbine/generator is currently on hold in Soda Springs, Idaho.
