Power Generation in Florida to Utilize Diversified Fuel to Increase Capacity by 33%

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Developers are proposing up to 20,000 megawatts (MW) of new generation in Florida. If all projects are constructed this would increase generation capacity by 33%, bringing the state's capacity up to 80,000 MW. New planned generation unit additions will be primarily natural-gas-fired combined-cycle units followed by nuclear units. Florida has issued a stay of development for the time being for coal, but it could still be in the mix. On the renewable front, there are biomass, waste-to-energy, landfill gas-to -energy, tidal, wind and solar projects also under development in the state.

About 50% of the new generation being developed comprises 62 gas and/or oil-fired simple-cycle or combined-cycle generation units. Nuclear generation comes in second with plans for 4,400 MW to 5,200 MW of generation, representing an increase of 110% to 130% with four new units.

The development of renewable energy includes tidal and wave energy projects, utilizing new technologies. Although Florida is known as the Sunshine State, it is just starting to get into commercial-size solar projects with a 10-MW project to be installed at NASA. The leading U.S. wind developer, FPL Energy, is assisting Florida Power & Light on its first windfarm to be built in Florida.
