PPL Corporation (NYSE: PPL) (Allentown, Penn.) has started construction on a $250 million 600 mega-watt (MW) combined cycle power plant in Pennsylvania. The Lower Mount Bethel Plant located in Bangor, Pennsylvania on Depues Ferry Road started construction in November 2001 and is scheduled to be in commercial operation in the third quarter of 2003 with 25 to 30 full time employees.
The combined cycle plant will consist of two units utilizing Siemens Westinghouse W501FD combustion turbines and one Siemens Westinghouse KN steam turbine. Foster Wheeler Incorporated (NYSE: FWC) (Clinton, N.J.) was awarded the engineering and construction contract.
Founded in June 1920, PPL Corporation has an impressive generation capacity of nearly 10,000MW, with an additional 4,600MW currently under development. The corporation serves nearly six million customers in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Latin America. For the third quarter of 2001, PPL reported revenue of over $1.4 billion with an operating profit of $339 million.
