Reliant Energy Corporation Begins Commercial Startup of 520-Megawatt Plant expansion at Seward Power Station

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Reliant Energy Mid Atlantic Power Holding (Johnstown, Pennsylvania) a subsidiary of Reliant Energy Corporation (NYSE: REI) (Houston, Texas) have commenced full commercial operation of an $800 million power plant expansion project at the Seward Power Station located in New Florence, Pennsylvania in Westmoreland County (Plant 1016856, PEC 12000814).

Construction for the expansion project started in June 2001 and was completed in late 2003. Reliant began full commercial operation of the project at the end of April 2004. The new expansion involved upgrading the existing 80-year old, 200 megawatt (MW) station which consisted of one 62MW Siemens Westinghouse and one 156MW GE Power Systems steam turbine generator with a single 520MW Alstom condensing steam turbine generator and two Alstom fluidized bed boilers. The project features state-of-the-art air emissions reduction technology, including selective non-catalytic reduction (SNCR) for the control of NOx emissions, and dry scrubbers for catalytic oxidation to reduce CO emissions.

Burns & McDonnell headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri were responsible for the engineering duties on the project. Duke /Flour Daniel (D/FD) based in Charlotte, North Carolina, acted as the general contractor for the project.
