Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Construction is well underway on the $80 million Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute's (Rensselaer, New York) Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies research facility. Located in the heart of the Rensselaer campus, the 218,000 square foot biotechnology building will provide state-of-the art research space for more than 350 researchers in the fields of biotechnology, information technology, and related disciplines. Specific areas of focus for the center will include functional tissue engineering, regenerative medicine, integrated systems biology, bioinformatics, biocatalysis, and metabolic engineering.
Designed by the joint venture team of Burt Hill Kosar Rittelmann (Butler, Pennsylvania) and Bohlin Cywinski Jackson (Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania), the new center will mirror historic architectural features of Rensselaer's Quad residence hall located at the opposite end of the street. The new facility will house laboratories, offices, an auditorium, and conference rooms for faculty members, researchers, graduate students, and staff. A formal groundbreaking was held in May of 2002 and construction is expected to be complete in 2004.
