Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Privately held Filipino ethanol producer San Carlos Bioenergy Corporation (San Carlos, Philippines) has temporarily ceased production at the company's 40 million-liter-per-year sugarcane-based fuel ethanol plant in San Carlos. The plant has not been producing since a maintenance shutdown was completed in June this year.
Around May of this year, San Carlos Bioenergy decided to suspend plans to expand the plant to 80 million gallons per year. An investment of $5 million had been expected. The company said ethanol prices dropped below the cost of production, and the plant was losing nearly $350,000 per month. The expansion has been shelved until market conditions improve.
The company has asked the government increase the ethanol import tariff to 20% to reduce the influx of imports, but no decision has been made.
There are currently seven new projects under development in the country, but none have reached the construction phase. The plants represent a capital investment of more than $360 million.
Industrial Info's Ethanol Database provides a comprehensive outline of all current development activities in the emerging alternative fuels market. This database covers 177 ethanol plants in operation and 530 plants under development. It also covers 145 operational biodiesel plants and 245 biodiesel plants under development.
