Scrubbers Being Installed on Pennsylvania Station to Reduce SO2 Emissions

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Wet flue gas desulfurization (FGD) scrubbers are being installed on the Keystone power station's (Shelocta, Pennsylvania) coal-fired units 1 and 2 to reduce sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions. Six companies own a stake in the station with Reliant Energy (NYSE:RRI) (Houston Texas) being part owner and operator of the station.

The owners selected a regional office of Shaw Stone and Webster (Englewood, Colorado) to provide engineering for the installation of Siemens wet FGDs on the two coal tangential-fired Alstom/Combustion Engineering boilers each with a 936-megawatt Siemens Westinghouse steam turbine/generator set to reduce SO2 emissions to meet new air quality mandates. Construction started in 2007, and the FGD units are scheduled to be tied-in to the boilers during spring and fall outages of 2009.
