Skanska Appointed to Build Gas Pipeline in Puerto Rico

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--In early January, Skanska (Stockholm, Sweden) was contracted to build a gas pipeline for the Puerto Rico Electric Power Authority. Construction on the pipeline is planned to begin in February 2008. The $74 million project comprises a 20-inch-wide and 42-mile-long pipeline.

Skanska will be responsible for designing, permitting, construction, commissioning and start-up of the line, which will transport natural gas from the EcoElectrica terminal in Penuelas. The terminal has a 524-megawatt, liquefied-natural-gas-fired combined-cycle cogeneration facility, a 1 million-barrel LNG terminal and a 2 million-gallon-per-day desalination plant to a combined-cycle plant in Aguirre in southern Puerto Rico. The project will be in the hands of a joint venture formed by two of Skanska subsidiaries, Skanska USA Building and Skanska Latin America, which will hold equal shares in the project. In September, Skanska was awarded the contract to build two refinery units at the Presidente Bernardes refinery in Cubatao in Brazil's Sao Paulo state. The contract, which includes the detailed engineering, procurement, construction and assembly, commissioning, and start-up assistance of the plant, entails the construction of a sulfur-recuperation unit and a gas treatment unit.
