Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--SNF Flopam, a division of SNF Incorporated (Riceboro, Georgia), has started construction on an estimated $400 million grassroot water-soluble polymer manufacturing plant in Plaquemine, Louisiana. Polyacrylamide is the company's main product.
Groundbreaking ceremonies took place in September 2010, and civil work has started on an 800-acre site for the plant. This will be done in five phases. The first phase is planned to be completed in the third quarter of 2011, and additional phases will be completed each year after that until 2015. The new plant will consist of approximately nine units when fully operational.
The production units of the new plant will include an acrylamide unit, a polyacrylamide power unit, a DMA/AC/DADMAC (dimethylamine, allyl chloride, diallyldimethylammonium chloride) unit, a specialty products unit, an emulsion unit and a polyamine unit with auxiliary and miscellaneous equipment. The DADMAC unit will consist of up to two production lines. The polyamine unit will consist of two production lines, and the specialty products unit may be used as an emulsion production line.
James Construction Group LLC (Baton Rouge, Louisiana) was selected as the contractor for the first phase, and several additional contractors will be selected as each additional phase begins construction. Global Environmental Solutions Incorporated (Marietta, Georgia) is being used as a consultant. SNF is also utilizing a sister company, Floquip Engineering (Riceboro), for support on this project.
In the state of Louisiana, there are several other large grassroot chemical plant projects that are projected to kick off in 2011. Among these are plans by Air Products & Chemicals Incorporated (NYSE:APD) (Allentown, Pennsylvania) for a grassroot hydrogen plant in Luling, Louisiana, which has an estimated cost of $245 million. Construction is planned to begin in the third quarter of this year. Myriant Technologies LLC (Quincy, Massachusetts) is proposing a grassroot succinic acid plant in Lake Providence, Louisiana, costing an estimated $70 million in the second quarter of this year.
