South Carolina Electric & Gas Company Completes Construction of $450 Million Power Plant

Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). South Carolina Electric & Gas Company (SCE&G), a subsidiary of SCANA Corporation (SGC) (Columbia, South Carolina) has completed construction and is in startup testing for the $450 Million, 875 megawatt Jasper County Power Station located in Hardeeville, South Carolina. (Plant 1055208, PEC 16001001)

Construction for the new power station started in April 2002 and was completed in early spring 2004. SCE&G anticipates full commercial operation of the project in May of 2004. The plant will operate in a 3-on-1 combined cycle configuration consisting of three dual fueled 170-megawatt GE Power Systems MS7001FA PG7241 (FA) combustion turbine generators equipped with inlet chiller systems, three Nooter/Eriksen triple-pressure reheat heat recovery steam generator and a 405-megawatt Alstom Power condensing steam turbine generator all of which will be capable of producing 875-megawatts of power. The project will also feature state-of-the art air emissions-reduction technology including selective catalytic reduction (SCR) for the control of NOx emissions.

Beaufort-Jasper Water & Sewer Authority (BJWSA) will provide raw and treated water to the power plant. BJWSA will take the water from the Savannah River, about two miles southeast of the plant site. The water authority is building a new water treatment facility adjacent to the power plant across Purrysburg Road. Jasper County stands to gain $2.9 Million per year in property taxes from the development of the project through a fee-in-lieu-of-taxes agreement with SCANA. The tax agreement freezes the power plant's property taxes at a certain level for 20 years.

Duke/Flour Daniel (D/FD), headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, performed both the engineering and the general construction for the project.
