Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Statkraft SF (Oslo, Norway), a state-owned energy utility, plans to shut down the 1,120-megawatt (MW) Sima Power Plant, one of the largest hydropower stations in Norway, for annual maintenance work in April. Plant officials said routine work and inspections will be performed on the plant's four generating units during the five-week maintenance period.
The plant, located in Eidfjord in western Norway's Hordaland region, was inaugurated in 1977. It generates electricity from sources including the Hardangerjokulen glacier and is equipped with two 310-MW and two 250-MW hydraulic turbines manufactured by Kvaerner with generators supplied by Asea Brown Boveri, now Alstom (EPA:ALO) (Levallois-Perret, France).
Statkraft owns 65% of the Sima facility, while Bergenhalvoens Kommunale Kraftselskap owns 26.25% and Sunnhordland Kraftlag owns 8.75%. The plant's operations center, where production control, planning and monitoring takes place, is located in Sauda, approximately 100 kilometers from Eidfjord. Statkraft operates 143 hydropower plants in Norway, 58 in Sweden, 11 in Germany, four in Finland and one in the U.K.
