Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). Gwinn, Michigan-based Superior Extrusion Incorporated (Plant 1062480) has awarded an architectural and engineering contract to Upper Peninsula Engineers and Architects Incorporated (Houghton, Michigan) for the first phase of preliminary design for a 50,000 square foot addition to its manufacturing plant. The addition will more than double its present 42,000 square foot facility area. Included in the expansion plans is a new 2,800 to 3,400 ton aluminum extrusion press to complement the 1,650 ton press already in use, as well as a billet saw for cutting aluminum "logs".

The company, which produces over 800,000 pounds of extruded aluminum product a month, is approaching production capacity and finds that it needs to expand, in order to keep up with demand. Superior makes a number of products, among them tubular running boards for automotive end use, such as in SUVs and pickup trucks, extruded window frames, and other diverse products.

The construction is a little more than a year away from fruition, at this point (PEC 18001832), while financing is lined up and outstanding infrastructure issues are resolved. Widening of roads will be required to handle the increased load of truck traffic.

Marquette County and the Michigan Department of Economic Development are cooperating to fund infrastructure requirements created by the expansion.

Founded by Randy and Myron DeBolt in 1996, Superior Extrusion became operative in 1999. The company has 70 employees, and with the extension would add as many as 50 more.
