Syncrude Wraps Up Major Upgrade of Mildred Lake Oil Sands Mine in Alberta

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Syncrude Canada Limited (Fort McMurray, Alberta) recently announced that it is 99% complete with construction on its mine trains replacement project at the Mildred Lake North oil sands mine in Alberta. Syncrude has rebuilt and relocated four mine trains at the Mildred Lake site. The new mine trains, which incorporate Syncrude's new wet crushing technology are in the commissioning and startup stage, and should be operational by the end of the year.
In order to meet power requirements for expanded production, Syncrude is planning several additional projects that could begin construction in 2015, including the addition of a 92-megawatt, natural gas-fired power plant.

For the longer term, Syncrude is evaluating plans for the Mildred Lake Extension (MLX) project, which will include new open pit mines to replace capacity from the Mildred Lake North mine, which will be depleted around 2023. The Mildred Lake Extension project is estimated to cost $2 billion.
