Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--With $199 billion worth of active industrial projects, Texas continues to reign as the leading state in the U.S. for industrial project activity. Texas accounts for 13% of all the activity in the U.S., according to Industrial Info's Industrial Project Database.
Companies worldwide are attracted to Texas because of its energy infrastructure, transportation infrastructure, and skilled labor pool. Inexpensive natural gas from regional shale plays like the Eagle Ford, located south of San Antonio, are not only driving additional infrastructure construction, but also attracting manufacturers and other industrial firms that use natural gas as a fuel or as a feedstock for petrochemicals. Probably the purest example of this is plans by Tenaris S.A. (NYSE:TS) (Luxemburg) to build a $1.5 billion steel pipe mill in Bay City, Texas. For more details, see October 27, 2013, article - Bay City, Texas, Excited at Prospect of Tenaris Steel Pipe Mill.
The Power Industry has the greatest value of active projects in the state, with 251 projects totaling $80 billion. Panda Energy Incorporated (Dallas, Texas) is constructing three identical-sized power plants in the Dallas area, including a $650 million, natural gas-fired, combined-cycle power plant in Sherman, Texas. First reported by Industrial Info in 2009, Bechtel (San Francisco, California) is providing engineering, procurement and construction services for all three projects.
The Oil & Gas sector, which includes production, transmission and terminals, is the second-largest for active industrial projects after the Power Industry, with more than $64 billion in projects.
Accounting for more than one-third of the projects in Texas, the Chemical Processing Industry has $30 billion worth of active projects. In the greater Houston area, there is a buzz as petrochemical manufacturers plan a number of olefin-related processing plant constructions to take advantage of the favorable natural gas feedstock cost. For example, C3 Petrochemicals LLC (Houston, Texas) is planning a $1.2 billion propane dehydrogenation unit at its Chocolate Bayou plant.
