Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--THUMS Long Beach Company (Long Beach, California), a subsidiary of Occidental Petroleum Corporation (NYSE:OXY) (Los Angeles, California) has completed construction of a new amine gas treatment plant located in Long Beach, above the Wilmington oilfield in Los Angeles County. The company gets its name from the oil property's original owners: Texaco, Humble, Union, Mobil and Shell.
The field, developed in 1965, has produced more than 930 million barrels of oil and still holds an estimated 100 million barrels that have yet to be recovered. The company operates under strict environmental guidelines and uses the slow and steady approach to gathering oil because of the location of the operation.
Some of the field's wells are located on the artificial "Island White" in Long Beach named to honor American astronaut Edward H. White. The drilling operations on the island are virtually invisible to the naked eye at first glance. The island consists of multiple storage tanks, a network of piping and an oil derrick that are covered to conceal the equipment. Additional oil islands in the Long Beach area include Grissom Island, Freeman Island and Chaffe Island.
