Released Wednesday, September 15, 2004
Researched by Industrialinfo.com (Industrial Information Resources, Incorporated; Houston, Texas). When looking at the list of the top engineering and construction (E&C) firms ranked by total investment value (TIV) of active projects in North America, one cannot help but notice that the list is dominated by E&C firms specializing in energy development. These E&C firms have been awarded various stages of market analysis, feasibility studies, design, and engineering and/or construction services for 360 active industrial projects, with a TIV in excess of $105 billion, in North America. The majority of these energy development projects fall into four industry sectors: power generation, LNG storage and distribution, oil sands processing and upgrading, and petroleum refining environmental and optimization. E&C firms specializing in these sectors, with the expertise to handle large mega-project development from the early planning stages through to construction, find themselves on the list.
Riding high on a wave of oil sands mining and downstream bitumen upgrading projects, two Calgary, Alberta-based engineering and construction firms find themselves in the upper echelon of North American E&C firms for ongoing industrial project activity. Colt Engineering Corporation (Calgary, Alberta) comes in at number one on the list of the top E&C firms with active industrial project work, with 26 projects representing $14.6 billion. The majority of these projects are Alberta oil sands related, including mining, steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD), or bitumen upgrader refinery unit engineering. However, Colt is also engaged in several large natural gas pipeline projects in Alaska, such as BP Canada Energy Company's Prudhoe Bay pipeline projects, and Imperial Oil Limiteds MacKenzie Delta pipeline.
Bantrel Company (Calgary, Alberta) comes in at number six on the list, with 33 projects representing $6.6 billion in ongoing industrial project activity. The large majority of these projects are bitumen upgrader unit additions at established Athabasca oil sands processing facilities in Alberta for owners such as Husky Energy Incorporated, Suncor Energy Incorporated, and Canadian Natural Resources Limited. There are also several grassroot oil sands mine and upgraders planned. Bantrell is involved to a lesser extent with petroleum refineries in the U.S., including over $125 million worth of projects at one of ConocoPhillips' West Coast refineries.
Not surprising, General Electric (GE) (NYSE:GE)(Fairfield, Connecticut) and subsidiaries are second on the list, with nearly $13 billion in planned power generation projects in North America. One such subsidiary is GE Wind Energy (Atlanta, Georgia), which is involved in more than $11 billion in wind generation projects in the U.S.
Other notables on the list include Bechtel, Parsons Corporation, and Siemens.
