Two Large Wind Power Projects Begin Operations in Eastern China

Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--After nearly four months of commissioning, all 50 wind turbines in the 100-megawatt (MW) Phase II project of the Changjiang'ao windfarm were put into operation on December 31, 2007, in eastern China's Fujian Province. The added capacity makes the Changjiang'ao windfarm the largest in Fujian.

The windfarm is on Pingtan Island, which is rich in wind-power resources. In September 2000, 10 6-MW wind turbines went into operation as part of Phase I. In March 2004, the Wind Power Preparation Office of Pingtan County started the tendering on Phase II based on the successful operation of Phase I. Phase II was furnished with 50 2-MW large wind turbines with a total investment of $118 million.

On December 30, 2007, the first batch of two 1.5-MW wind turbines in Cixi windfarm, the first large wind power project in Zhejiang Province, went into operation. The Cixi windfarm is a demonstration project for new energy in Zhejiang province. The project is jointly invested by Changjiang New Energy Development Company Limited (Shanghai) and Cixi Wind Power Generation Company Limited (Zhejiang). The project's plans include 33 1.5-MW wind turbines with a total investment of more than $80 million.

Construction of the project began in November 2006. So far, the first five wind turbines have been completed and erected. The first set of units began operation on December 30, 2007, and three others will be commissioned in January 2008. The entire project is expected to be complete in 2008.
