Researched by Industrial Information Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Canal Power Station, which is located in Sandwich, Massachusetts, shut down units 1 and 2 after the main transformer blew in November. The two generating units have a total capacity of 1,164 megawatts when at full load. The plant is owned and operated by NRG Canal LLC, a subsidiary of NRG (NYSE:NRG) (Princeton, New Jersey).
Repairs are on hold. Plant sources said that the transformer that is needed has to be ordered from overseas and that it will probably be October or later before the plant has the units available to return to service, if there are no delays. Plant sources said that it has been difficult to find one in the states because of the size of the main transformer.
Plant officials said that just last week, they were contemplating whether it would better to purchase another transformer and make the repairs, or just close the plant due to costs. Sources said that the units do not often run and are normally on reserve (standby). When the units are on standby, they generally are ready to start up when generation is in demand.
An investigation has been launched into the cause of the incident.
